Negative of Mrs. Upchurch's bedroom in Prescott, Nevada County, Arkansas. This probably the home of Ila Upchurch (1892-1989). Through a grant, Ila Upchurch was brought to Nevada County, Arkansas from Mississippi to start the Nevada County Training School, a school for African Americans in Oak Grove, Nevada County, Arkansas. She later donated the property for the Ila Upchurch Center which houses the Prescott Alternative School next to City Park in Prescott.

Ila Dedia Upchurch was born in Buena Vista, Chickasaw County, Miss., the daughter of James and Rachel Upchurch. She was the fourth child of three girls and three boys. She attended Okalona Industrial College and Tuskegee Institute in Alabama before having to quit in order to assume family responsibilities.
